Project Overview
This highway noise barrier project involved installing hollow polycarbonate sheet panels along a busy urban expressway to reduce traffic noise for nearby residential communities. The 2.5-kilometer stretch of highway required a durable, weather-resistant sound barrier that could withstand high winds, vehicle exhaust, and constant UV exposure. The Challenge
The noise barrier project presented several critical challenges. The panels needed to achieve a minimum sound reduction of 30dB while remaining transparent enough to not block views for adjacent buildings. The installation had to be completed during nighttime hours to minimize traffic disruption. Additionally, the barrier had to withstand typhoon-force winds common in the coastal region, with a design life of over 15 years with minimal maintenance.
Our Solution
We supplied Jietai 16mm thick hollow polycarbonate sheets with co-extruded UV protection on both sides. The multi-wall panel structure provides excellent sound absorption, reducing traffic noise by up to 35dB. The panels were mounted in aluminum frames between highway guardrail posts, with rubber gaskets to seal joints and prevent vibration. The lightweight panels (approximately 3.5 kg per square meter) reduced structural requirements and installation costs.
Results
The noise barrier was completed on schedule, covering 2.5 km with over 5,000 square meters of polycarbonate panels. Post-installation acoustic testing confirmed 32-35dB noise reduction, exceeding the 30dB target. The residential communities behind the barrier reported a significant improvement in living quality, with measured noise levels dropping from 75dB to below 45dB. The transparent panels maintain visibility and natural light for adjacent buildings.
