Project Overview
A major expressway in Jiangsu Province required an effective noise barrier system to reduce traffic noise for nearby residential communities. The 3.2-kilometer section passes within 50 meters of several apartment complexes. Jietai provided solid polycarbonate sheets for the sound insulation tunnel, offering both acoustic performance and visual transparency that traditional concrete barriers could not match.
The Challenge
The expressway noise level reached 75 dB during peak hours, exceeding the national standard of 60 dB for residential areas. The barrier needed to reduce noise by at least 20 dB while allowing drivers to see through it for safety. It also had to withstand vehicle vibration, exhaust fumes, and extreme weather conditions year-round. Traditional sound barriers using concrete or metal panels would completely block visibility and create a tunnel effect.
Our Solution
Jietai supplied 12mm thick solid polycarbonate sheets with special acoustic performance characteristics. The transparent panels were installed in aluminum frames along both sides of the expressway, reaching a height of 5 meters. The PC sheets effectively absorb and deflect sound waves while maintaining over 85% optical clarity for driver visibility. Each panel was treated with UV-resistant coating for long-term outdoor durability, and the lightweight nature of PC reduced the structural steel requirements by 30%.
Results
Post-installation testing showed noise levels in the nearby residential areas dropped from 75 dB to 55 dB, exceeding the required standard by 5 dB. The transparent barrier has been praised by both residents and drivers for maintaining a clear view while effectively blocking noise. After two years of service, the panels show no signs of yellowing or deterioration, and periodic cleaning keeps them looking like new.
