Project Overview
A large mobile shopping mall in East China required a durable, lightweight canopy system for its outdoor pedestrian walkways and escalator areas. The client needed a solution that provided shelter from rain and sun while maintaining a modern, open appearance. Jietai was contracted to supply hollow polycarbonate sheets for the entire canopy structure, covering approximately 2,800 square meters.
The Challenge
The shopping mall canopy faced several challenges: the curved architecture required flexible yet strong materials; the structure had to withstand typhoon-level winds common in coastal regions; and the transparent roofing needed to allow natural light while reducing heat buildup underneath. Traditional glass was ruled out due to weight and shatter risk, and metal roofing would block too much light.
Our Solution
Jietai supplied 8mm and 10mm hollow polycarbonate sheets in clear and opal white finishes. The hollow multi-wall structure provided excellent thermal insulation while reducing material weight by 50% compared to solid sheets. Each panel was pre-cut to custom sizes at our factory, with UV protection coating on both sides to prevent yellowing. The sheets were installed using aluminum profiles with rubber gaskets, allowing for thermal expansion and contraction while maintaining watertight seals.
Results
The canopy was completed on schedule and has been performing exceptionally well for over three years. The hollow PC sheets provide 65% light transmission with 40% better thermal insulation than glass, keeping the walkways comfortable year-round. The structure has survived multiple typhoons with wind speeds exceeding 120 km/h without any damage. Mall management reported increased foot traffic in the covered areas by approximately 35%.
