Project Overview
Polycarbonate hollow sheets continue to be one of the most versatile glazing materials in modern construction. This project showcase brings together three completed installations where 6mm to 10mm multiwall polycarbonate sheets were specified for very different purposes: vehicle shelters, pedestrian walkways and agricultural greenhouses. Each project confirms the same core value: polycarbonate delivers daylight, durability and protection in one lightweight panel.
The Challenge
The carport project sat in an open industrial yard with no natural shade, exposing parked vehicles and staff access routes to strong sunlight and rain. The walkway project needed a lightweight canopy that would not overload an existing timber structure. The greenhouse operator required a glazing material that could maximise light transmission while withstanding hail impact in a windy region.
Our Solution
In all three projects, multiwall polycarbonate sheets were selected over glass and acrylic for three reasons: impact resistance up to 200 times stronger than glass of the same thickness, UV-protected co-extruded surfaces that prevent yellowing, and a weight of only one-sixth that of glass, which simplified framing and installation. Curved profiles were used for the carport and greenhouse roofs to shed rain and snow efficiently, while the walkway used a gentle arch that complemented the residential setting.
Results
The carport now provides cool, dry parking all year round, with visible light transmission around 80% keeping the space bright without glare. The walkway canopy protects pedestrians in rain and direct sun while allowing daylight to pass through, and the timber structure required no additional reinforcement thanks to the low panel weight. The greenhouse reported more consistent internal temperatures and full daylight for crops, with no panel failures after a full year of operation including two hailstorms.
